Chester’s Edgar House hotel has been named the second most romantic hotel in the UK and the fifth in Europe.

The luxury guesthouse on the banks of the River Dee has earned yet another accolade after being named in Trip Advisor’s 2016 Travellers’ Choice Awards for Romantic Hotels just ahead of Valentine’s Day.

Edgar House came second to The Old Rectory Hotel in Martinhoe, Devon as the most romantic hotel in the country and beat competition in Capri, Prague and Spain to come fifth in the top 10 most romantic hotels in Europe.

Only last month, Trip Advisor, whose winners are based on the millions of reviews and opinions collected from travellers worldwide, named the hotel as the top in the world’s small hotel category, and that same month it was named one of MSN.com’s top 10 best places in the UK for a winter break.

And last year the hotel was also named in Trivago’s top 20 and in the Good Hotel Guide.

James Kay, TripAdvisor spokesperson, said: “With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, the good news is that you don’t have to travel far to experience some of the best rated romantic getaways in the world – they can be found right here in the UK. Average room rates at some of the UK’s best rated romantic hotels available to book on TripAdvisor from little over £100, so planning that perfect couples retreat need not break the bank.”

Co-owner of Edgar House Mike Stephen said recently that his staff were ‘over the moon’ to be recognised by TripAdvisor as a 2016 Travellers’ Choice Awards winner.

“To be named the number one small hotel in the world is an incredible honour, and we can’t find the words to say how thrilled and humbled we are,” he said.

Winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews from travellers on TripAdvisor gathered over a 12-month period with emphasis placed on reviews marked as a couples stay.
