Frodsham’s Gary Barlow wowed audiences at The Lowry on Tuesday night (January 12) when he took to the stage for a surprise appearance following a performance of his new musical The Girls.
The show, running at The Lowry until Saturday, January 30, is a brand British musical written by Gary and Olivier Award-winning writer Tim Firth, of Alvanley. The pair have been friends for 25 years.
The Girls is inspired by the true story of a group of ladies who decided to appear nude for a Women’s Institute calendar in order to raise funds to buy a settee for their local hospital, in memory of one of their husbands.
On Tuesday, Gary and Tim joined the original ‘calendar girls’ and the cast of the musical on stage following the show for a special surprise encore.
The Take That singer led the delighted audience in a rendition of the song ‘Dare’ – one of the key numbers in the show.
More than 300 nurses from the North West were invited to the special performance, including nurses from the charity Bloodwise – the calendar girls’ chosen charity. Since the original nude calendar was created in 1998, nearly four million pounds has been raised for the charity. During the run of The Girls at The Lowry, there will be bucket collections for Bloodwise following performances.
