Rehearsals are in full swing at a Chester theatre to bring a much loved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical to the stage.
Chester theatre company Tip Top Productions are busy preparing to stage the West End and Broadway classic Oklahoma! which will run at the Forum Studio Theatre in Chester from August 11-20 August at 7.30pm with a matinee performance on Saturday, August 20 at 2.30pm.
The show, musically directed by Simon Phillips, will be staged in a concert style setting and directed by Steve Davies who said: “This specially devised concert version of Oklahoma! suits the intimate atmosphere of the studio theatre perfectly and enables us to bring the show to Chester in a unique way.
“It was the first Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration and is one of the most produced musicals in America. We have a very talented and experienced cast and crew on board and we are looking foward to giving the show our special Tip Top twist.”
Oklahoma! is based on Green Grow The Lilacs by Lynn Riggs. Laurey, a headstrong farm girl, doesn’t want to fall willingly into the arms of the handsome cowboy, Curly.
In her attempts to avoid him, she ends up turning to the dark-hearted farm hand, Jud Fry, who wants to do more than take her to the dance.
The show features many of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s best loved songs including Oh What a Beautiful Morning, The Surrey with the Fringe on Top and People Will Say We’re in Love which is said to be The Queen and Prince Phillip’s “special song”.
