Atomic Kitten star was first choice for Norma Jean The Musical
Kerry Katona said she will grab her latest challenge with both hands as she steps into the role of screen icon Marilyn Monroe in .
The former Atomic Kitten star has landed the lead in an upcoming stage show, Norma Jean The Musical.
She said: “I’m thrilled to have been given this opportunity to play one of the world’s biggest female icons and can’t wait to get to work.
“A successful career in drama has always been a main goal of mine and this role is a challenge but one I’m going to grab with both hands.”
Kerry’s manager Martin O’Shea said the job will help people see the Warrington mum-of-four as a serious actress.
He added: “We’ve been looking for the right drama role for Kerry for a while, she’s actually much better known in Ireland as an actress than a reality TV star because of her work on things like Showbands. She was also in the West End in the Vagina Monologues to great reviews.
“It’s quite a dark script and will be a big challenge but being challenged is normality for Kerry. We’re looking forward to it.”
Kerry’s debut performance in the show will take place in London in front of an invite-only industry audience on September 22.
Writer Belvedere Pashun insisted Kerry was the main woman he had in mind to portray the enigmatic screen legend in his musical.
Karen Struel-White, who is behind the project, said: “There were only a handful of performers that Belvedere Pashun would even contemplate for the role of Marilyn Monroe and right at the top was Kerry Katona.
“The script isn’t an ordinary bio-drama and Belvedere has taken a new route into the personal history of Marilyn based on little-known facts from her life.”
In a statement on the show’s website Belvedere Pashun said: “Marilyn’s life was one of extremes – poverty, abandonment, abuse followed by a flowering beauty which brought attention, fame, wealth and power and then the well-documented tragic fall.
“I needed an actor of huge talent, personality and experience – Kerry was at the top of my list.
“This show will change the shape of people’s perceptions of Marilyn Monroe and we expect to announce a new star of drama on stage and screen with Kerry’s performance.”
The role will provide a timely career boost for the 32-year-old who was declared bankrupt for a second time and has put her plans to marry George Kay on hold.
