An unprecedented 13,000 seats have been sold already for Chester Performs’ acclaimed Grosvenor Park Open Air theatre in Chester – which is just a third of the way into its fourth season.
The company hopes to end the season 50% up on 2012.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Glyn Maxwell’s new adaptation of Cyrano De Bergerac have opened to strong critical praise and are playing to packed houses daily.
Othello, this year’s third and final production, opens on Friday (August 2), directed by Alex Clifton, GPOAT’s artistic director.
With extended seating, three professional productions, a longer run and the added bonus of decent weather - the annual open air theatre experience has been enhanced to the extent that tickets for all shows are selling at an all time premium.
The covered seating was originally added to ward off the rain - instead they have become a welcome respite from the hot sunshine!
As the only full–time professional open-air theatre company outside of London, the theatre also prides itself as being the ideal first theatre experience for families and youngsters.
Andrew Bentley, director of Chester Performs, said: “Of course the weather has helped to make this season the busiest ever.
“However our customers are responding to our artistic achievements, and we truly believe we have created a theatre, and company, which stands alongside the very best.
“It is unique outside London and is only one of three (the others are the Globe and Regent’s Park) full-time open air theatre companies in the UK.
“This year we have extended the rep season to three productions, with Glyn Maxwell’s astonishing adaptation of Cyrano complementing the works by Shakespeare.
“The addition of Othello , our language’s greatest tragedy, is already proving enormously popular and pre-sales for this already amazing.
“We have added another 100 seats and created the ‘perfect O’ in what surely be the most conducive space for outdoor theatre in the country.”
