Chester Theatre Club scooped three awards at Cheshire Theatre Guild’s prestigious annual awards ceremony, held at Altrincham Little Theatre.

The club, whose home is Chester Little Theatre in Gloucester Street, was nominated for a total of seven awards, including an unprecedented six for one play.

Entertaining Angels, which played to full houses in March this year, received nominations for Best Actor (Ian Dunn), Best Actress (Janice Fryett), Best Supporting Actress (Liz Stafford), Best Director (Margaret Bennett), Best Lighting and Sound and Best Set and Presentation.

John Henry was nominated as Best Actor for his role of Alan Turing in the highly-acclaimed production last November of Breaking the Code, directed by Jane Barth.

Both John Henry and Janice Fryett are new members of Chester Theatre Club, both playing their first lead roles in a dramatic presentation.

John and Janice also come from musical backgrounds - John as a member of the group Soundwall and Janice from opera, musicals and cabaret.

At the end of the evening, the club was delighted to take home trophies for Best Actor and Best Actress won by John and Janice, both playing parts of great emotional range, fighting off their personal demons and, in Janice’s case, chatting with angels.

Entertaining Angels and Breaking the Code were praised by the adjudicator, professional actress and director Michaela Warrilow, for their direction and innovative interpretations of the scripts.

Entertaining Angels beat off stiff competition from 50 performances throughout Cheshire to take the award for Best Overall Production 2014-15.
