Pianist David Newton will be leading a truly all-star international line-up when he comes to Clwyd Theatr Cymru in Mold on Tuesday (November 19) for a special concert staged by North Wales Jazz.

Having begun his musical career in Yorkshire, followed by Edinburgh, David was persuaded by his old roommate from the renowned Leeds College of Music, Alan Barnes, to move to London, and by 1995 he was working regularly with Carol Kidd, Marion Montgomery, Tina May, Annie Ross, Claire Martin, and Stacey Kent, with whom he spent the next ten years recording and travelling the world.

Simultaneously, David was composing music for his own CDs as well as writing for Martin Taylor, Alan Barnes, Tina May and Claire Martin. His music can now be heard on many television productions, especially in the US, where over 20 movies benefit from his haunting themes.

By 2003, David had established his own label, Brightnewday Records, and in that year he and Andy Cleyndert featured on the Don Weller Quartet release The Way You’re Going to Look Tomorrow Morning!

David Newton was made a fellow of Leeds College of Music in 2003, and in 2011 was voted Best Pianist in the British Jazz Awards for the tenth time.

One of the best known and well-loved figures on the UK scene, saxophonist Don Weller has worked extensively with the great American band leader Gil Evans and with UK master of jazz piano Don Weller Electric Quartet, which features Chris Briscoe and Steve Waterman, is almost legendary.

The Don Weller Big Band includes the truly all-star sax section of Peter King, Nigel Hitchcock, Mornington Lockett, Art Themen and Alan Barnes, plus trumpeters Gerard Prescencer and Henry Lowther, and pianist David Newton. Mornington Lockett and Art Themen also feature with Don on the 2008 CD, The 3 Tenors at the Appleby Jazz Festival. With his unique sound, Don Weller has become first choice for TV and film soundtracks including Sting's jazz club movie Stormy Monday, and with Charlie (Rolling Stones) Watts for his various international jazz concert bands. Don is a musician with his own distinctive voice, his own way of doing things and a consummate grasp of the musical language.

The concert starts at 8pm and admission is £12, concessions £10 and schoolchildren £5.
