Hundreds of voices will fill a city quarter in July as Northgate Festivals hosts a Choir Day.

Choirs and performers of all ages, from Chester and Liverpool, will present their work on two stages in Abbey Green and Rufus Court on Sunday, July 5.

Led by Theatre in the Quarter’s artistic director Matt Baker, who will act as compere for the day, the event will begin with a mass sing-along and include two new pieces of musical theatre performed by young people.

The Choir Day is just one of several festivals held in the Northgate Quarter over summer weekends.

Matt Baker said: “I was involved with the same event two years ago and was absolutely thrilled not only with the number of choirs who took part, but the sheer number of people who came along to enjoy the day.

“The day ended with over 500 people singing together – which was especially brilliant considering it was the Wimbledon’s Men’s Final at the same time!”

Choirs include Matt’s own A Handbag of Harmonies, five-piece female vocal group Signature, show choirs from Liverpool, including the Royal Court Theatre Choir, The Liverpool Royal Hospital Staff Choir and H’Arts and Voices and Ellesmere Port’s Fireflies choir.

Vocalize from Flintshire will be performing as well as a number of relatively new choirs to the Chester scene including Tattenhall Singers and Hoole Community Choir. A highlight will be the Queen’s Award winning Dee Sign Choir.

Matt is also keen to showcase some of the young talent from the city including St Werburgh’s and St Columba’s Primary School Choir and Upton Junior Choir.

One of Theatre in the Quarter’s youth theatres, Jigsaw Music Theatre, will premiere their new piece City of Stories, a musical journey around the city walls.

A new Blacon youth theatre will also perform its first ever piece Parade to Paradise, the culmination of a project in association with Cheshire Dance.

Matt added: “The Choir Day is a delightful way to spend a summer afternoon and it is entirely free. I hope many people will pop along to this wonderful part of the city and support these superb choirs from across the city and north west.”

The Choir Day will begin with a mass vocal warm up at 12.30pm on the Abbey Green stage.
