The Verve musician helps Chester busker on the road

Simon Jones lends his support to young singer-songwriter Sophie Morgan

A Chester busker has released her first single - thanks to the bass player of The Verve.

Singer-songwriter Sophie Morgan, 19, has been writing since she was nine-years-old.

She said: “I first started penning little poems and then after some piano lessons I began combining the two to create my first songs.”

Three years ago, Sophie, of Widnes, struck gold when she was invited to sing at a friend of her mother’s wedding.

She said: “Simon Jones of The Verve happened to be a guest and before long I was travelling back and forth to Chester to record some of my earliest songs in his studio in Great Barrow and he has been my musical guardian and friend ever since.”

Sophie recorded her single with Simon and a few friends in the atmospheric St Bartholomew’s Church in the village and since its release last week it has received play on BBC Merseyside Introducing.

She added: “I have handmade a limited number of physical copies which I will be selling at future gigs and when I go busking in Chester over Christmas.”

Sophie is a regular guest at Chester venues such as Telford’s Warehouse, Alexander's, The Compass and The Ship Inn.

Musical hometown

She said: “Since age 14 I have been travelling over the bridge to Chester to work with Simon, busk and to play gigs. Chester was the very first place I ever sang outside school (at Telford’s Warehouse open mic) and the city gave me my first paid gigs at places like The Ship Inn whilst I was starting my GCSEs – getting in at 2am and then up for school the next morning!

“It has been my musical hometown since Widnes no longer has a music venue.

“Wandering around the beautiful countryside; landscapes of Chester and its surrounding villages definitely has a huge influence in my lyrics.”

Sophie’s single Marionette is available on iTunes and Spotify.
