The Carden Arms in Tilston welcomes two BBC award winning young folk artists on Tuesday, April 8 as guests of Tilston Music Club.

Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar have enjoyed outstanding success in their short career to date.

Last month they were voted BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award Winners 2014 for the best newcomers, which followed on their success as BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award Winners 2013.

Greg, 20, of Chester, and Ciaran, 17, from Stoke, joined together in 2011 to make their debut at Norwich Folk Club – and haven’t looked back since.

At the Horizon awards the guitar and fiddle duo were chosen by scores of music industry representatives, including broadcasters, journalists, festival organisers, record company directors, agents and promoters.

A former pupil of Upton High School, Greg is the son of Chester musician Dave Russell who plays with the city based Full House band.

Aged 12 , he started playing guitar when at his home in Mickle Trafford and at 18 commenced solo gigs, at first supporting such acts as Lau, Karine Polwart and Kerfuffle in local music venues like the Chester Folk Club, Alexander’s and Telford’s Warehouse.

Cairan was a member of Celtic music band TRI and is an All Ireland and All Britain fiddle champion.

Since getting togther  they have played gigs across the country together and earning rave reviews.

Last year saw them appear at Cambridge Folk Festival and Fairport’s Cropredy Annual Convention as well as on Mark Radcliffe’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Show.

Greg is currently taking a break from his politics degree at Exeter University to have a year concentrating on music.

They also have an  album out – The Queen’s Lover – on the Fellside Records label.

Tilston Music Club host Geoff Edwin-Scott said: “We are very excited to have Greg and Ciaran with us in Tilston.

“This is really great for the music club as it among their first gigs since the Horizon award and they are now in much demand.

“With a wide range of influences, they have received rave reviews from performances all over the country. They will give us a great night at the Carden Arms  and we would advise people to buy tickets in advance as we expect a full house.”

The performance starts at 8pm on Tuesday, April 8. Admission is £8 with tickets available in advance from Geoff Edwin-Scott on 01829 250484.

Tilston Music Club now meets for singers’ nights on the first Wednesday of every month at the popular Carden Arms.

Musicians, singers and music fans are all welcome and entry is free.
