An acclaimed guitarist will be teaming up with the Chester Philharmonic for an evening of music with a Spanish theme at Chester Cathedral on Saturday, November 14.

Craig Ogden will take part in a performance of Rodrigo’s well known Concierto de Aranujuez. The programme, conducted by Juan Ortuño, will bring the warmth of Spain to a bleak November evening and also includes Chapi’s Prelude to La Revoltosa, Bizet’s Carmen Suite, Rimsky-Korsakov Cappricio Espagnol and de Falla’s El Sombrero De Tres Picos Suite No 2.

Craig Ogden is one of the most exciting artists of his generation. He studied guitar from the age of seven and percussion from the age of 13.

In 2004 he became the youngest instrumentalist to receive a Fellowship Award from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

One of the UK’s most recorded guitarists, his recordings for Virgin/EMI, Chandos, Nimbus, Hyperion, Sony and Classic FM have received wide acclaim.

Craig’s Classic FM albums have shot straight to No 1 in the UK classical chart in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014 respectively.

Craig’s latest recording for Classic FM, Craig Ogden and Friends, was released in June 2015 and also went straight to No 1 in the classical chart.

Juan Ortuño started music lessons in Madrid with his parents. Both were performers in the Spanish National Radio and Television Choir. His first ambition was astrophysics in which he obtained a Bachelors degree.

At the same time, he was studying voice, piano, and violin. He then decided to focus on a career in music and earned degrees in orchestral and choral conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Madrid.

After finishing his degrees in Spain, Juan was awarded with a scholarship from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to continue further studies in the UK.

He is a Masters graduate from the Royal Northern College of Music where he studied with Clark Rundell.

The concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets priced at £16, £12 and £9 are available from the Cathedral box office on 01244 500959 or by visiting www.chesterphilorchestra.co.uk.
