Live music can be enjoyed across Chester this weekend as part of the Fringe music festival.

Between June 19-21, gigs will be taking place at a number of city venues, many of which will be free of charge.

The aim is to promote talent from the area as well as Chester itself.

Chair of Chester Fringe Mark Williams said: “We are trying to offer something different, it’s all done by volunteers and we are showing up and coming artists before they get big.

“People always moan about nothing going on in the city and we want to change that.”

Singer-songwriter Tom Baxter, a regular feature on BBC Radio, will kick things off on Friday night at Alexander’s in Rufus Court. Support comes from Gary Edward Jones and tickets are priced £16.50.

The following night an Acoustic and Roots evening is to be held from 7.30pm at the Lock Keeper on Canal Side.

A range of acts will be performing including Bitter and Twisted, The Hoolies and the Glaaswalkers. Entry is £3 which includes entry into a prize raffle. Also on the bill are local singer-songwriters James Bazley and 16-year-old Courtney Roberts.

Curator of the Acoustic and Roots events Rose Price said: “There’s going to be a diverse range of acoustic music, not just in the way it sounds, but in the way it’s performed too. We want to introduce people to local and regional talent.”

Many of the fringe performers will also be taking over The Groves bandstand on Saturday and Sunday afternoon which can be enjoyed for free from 2pm on the banks of the River Dee.

Rounding out the weekend will be an open mic night at Telford’s Warehouse at Tower Wharf, starting at 8pm on Sunday. This is again totally free and will feature a guest appearance from classical quartet Operation Lightfoot.

Rose Price added: “It’s very accessible and it’s great to alert people to a culture which often gets overlooked.”
