Just when you thought there were not enough places to get a quick latte on the run, pub chain Wetherspoon has announced it will now be offering a takeaway service for hot drinks.

Competing with the likes of coffee shop giants Starbucks and Costa, the firm announced it will serve takeaway hot drinks at its 950 pubs - including one in Chester - from today (May 18).

And while you might pay over £2 for a decent cup in most coffee shops, Wetherspoon - which sells more than 50 million cups of coffee each year - has said its takeaway filter coffees will cost as little as 99p.

Wetherspoon currently has just one city centre pub - The Square Bottle on Foregate Street - after the Forest House venue on Love Street closed just a few days ago when it was acquired by small independent pub group Warm Hearth Ltd, trading as Brewhouse and Kitchen.

Chief executive John Hutson said: "Our coffee is extremely popular with customers. We sell around a million cups a week in our pubs across the UK, and believe customers will welcome the opportunity to enjoy a takeaway cup too, at 99p."
