If you're struggling to get your child to eat more of their five-a-day, the answer to your prayers could well lie at Asda on Chester's Greyhound Park.

The store is one of 224 in the UK that have started selling some rather unusual stripy peppers, following a successful trial last year.

Priced at £1, the unique, vertically striped yellow and red fruit, which maintains its appearance even when cooked, is 100% natural and hand-harvested in the Netherlands.

The peppers, which contain a higher dose of Vitamin C than an orange, are twice the size of standard yellow, red or green pepper and boast a naturally sweeter flavour.

It's welcome news for shoppers to the Chester Asda, who missed out on the recent wonky veg initiative , which saw hundreds of Asda stores making up selection boxes of 'ugly' and misshapen fruit and vegetables to sell on.

Charlie Mills, Asda’s Fresh Produce manager, said: “We’ve been working with growers for seven years, and we’re confident our pepper will earn its stripes with mums and kids alike.

“Our shoppers absolutely loved our stripy peppers when they were launched last summer, so we’re excited to re-launch this unique fruit. Not only does it save shoppers money, it also boosts nutrient levels with a high dose of vitamin C.

"The taste of the product is at the heart of what we’re trying to do at Asda.”

The peppers landed in Asda stores across the country on Monday March 14 and will be available online from Wednesday March 16.
