There are many reasons I like the Chinese Delight.

One of them has to be the fact that you have to walk across a mini footbridge over a river of koi carp to get to the lounge which even at the age of 26 is still cool.

I also like that there is a waiter armed with a hot towel for you as soon as your bum touches the sofa to make sure your hands are clean before you touch the table nuts!

Unfortunately the hygiene plan doesn’t always work, as proved by my dad who managed to dodge the towel giving waiter and head straight for the nuts...

Anyway, we were served drinks in the comfy and very Chinese-looking lounge while we looked at menu, and it is a big menu.

It was my birthday outing with my parents and sister, and I chose the Chinese Delight because it was local.

Having been a fussy eater until I was in my late teens, my love affair with Chinese food is still relatively new and I tend to stick to what I know through fear of not liking it, going hungry, and the food going to waste. Going to this restaurant with family meant I could pinch theirs to try and they couldn’t shout at me because it was my birthday.

I don’t like duck, and I’m not a huge fan of soup, so I decided a banquet wasn’t for me and me and my sister agreed to share a Supreme Combination (£16) to start instead - seaweed, steak rolls, salt and pepper chicken wings, prawn toast, seafood rolls, ribs and satay chicken - with a chicken Chow Mein (£8.65) and chicken with beansprouts (£8.95) to follow.

My parents went for the Celebration Banquet for two with added crispy duck (£49).

First up was the soup for the banquet, and my sister decided to order an extra chicken and sweetcorn like my mum, with my dad taking the Peking hot and sour.

Not the best start, my mum didn’t really like the texture of the chicken in the soup, it was extra “gloopy” and she left most of it.

My sister Jess wasn’t overly keen but worked around it and dad, well no complaints from him on the hot and sour but his eyes did start to water!

Then onto the starters, the banquet also came with a combination but ours was better. It was HUGE! One of those plus a few sides would have been enough for a main. As it contained all my favourite things, I went to town on it, and it was great and really tasty.

Our table had been booked for 8pm on a Wednesday and it was quite quiet so the service was really attentive and quick.

The restaurant is also well lit and from previous reviews people may remember I have a thing about being able to see my food when I’m eating it!

Straight after the starters came the duck, and me and my sister were offered plates to share the banquet duck which I thought was good as we hadn’t opted for it.

The duck is shredded table side by one of the waitresses which is good to watch but sadly the dish itself was a bit of a let down as it was dry but never the less it got eaten.

Then onto the mains. The banquet came with three dishes, and with my main, Jess’s main and my side of spring rolls the table was full - as were we.

It was nice but we struggled to get the food down us, everything was quite heavy and we were over-faced.

Thankfully, the staff saw our struggle and offered to pop it all into take out boxes for us to attempt the next day.

But that wasn’t all.

The banquet had pudding.

This is where the fast service became too quick. Puddings and coffees were served at the same time, and being the last people in there at 9.45pm we felt we were overstaying our welcome and rushed to finish off and grab the bill.

It came to £105 - around £26 each which considering the amount of food we’d consumed, and the leftovers, was quite reasonable.

The meal wasn’t the best I’ve had there, but I’ll be back I’m sure. It is my local Chinese restaurant after all!
