Peaky Blinders (9pm, BBC2)

Last week, Brummie gangster Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) seemed to have it all worked out.   In a series of breathtakingly bold deals he’d got the police off his back, and had persuaded trackside betting boss Billy Kimber not to shoot him, but to let him work for him instead.

Not bad going for someone who’s self-medicating with opium and Irish whiskey for what we’d now recognise as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

But as canny as Thomas Shelby is, he can’t control everybody and a large dollop of chaos is about to be thrown into the mix. Not least with Grace the singing barmaid (Annabelle Wallis) who is actually working undercover for the police. Plus, there’s the additional complication of his younger sister Ada who, defies his wishes by marrying Freddie – leader of the local communists.

And let’s not forget the stolen guns which fell into the Peaky Blinders’ lap in episode one.  It’s not just Winston Churchill who wants these back – plenty of other people would like to get their hands on them too.

But first Thomas is taking Grace to the Cheltenham races –  a brief flash of glamour in a series that continues to offer one surprise after another.

Super Giant Animals (9pm, BBC1)

Is this Steve Backshall’s audition tape to become David Attenborough’s successor?  If so, he’s absolutely got our attention.

He’s on the trail of the largest creatures on earth whose unique selling point is simply that they’re big.

It’s not an especially original quest, but it’s what he does when he finds them that’s extraordinary. Instead of marvelling at four metre long Nile crocodiles from a safe distance through a camera lens, Backshall slips into his wetsuit and dives alongside them.

One forces him and his cameramen to make a panicky dash for the surface.

And the footage of  him swimming alongside a small group of gigantic sperm whales is incredible.  If he keeps up stunts like these, he’s assured of an exciting career – but perhaps not a very long one.

Women Behind Bars With Trevor McDonald (ITV, 9pm)

Having already ‘done' death row, in Women Behind Bars with Trevor McDonald, the newsreader and presenter is now venturing inside two of Indiana's most dangerous female  prisons, and sees first-hand the manipulating ways of the inmates.

He heads to Rockville Correctional Facility, the largest female prison in Indiana which admits  hundreds of women each week. He also visits Indiana  Women's Prison, which houses cases that aren't for the faint-hearted.

He says: "Some people are genuinely bad, but some people have slipped into a thing... and life  takes a turn where you have been unlucky and I feel terribly sorry for people in situations like  that.”

We've a feeling we're about to agree with you, Trevor...

SOAP ROUND-UP

Emmerdale (7pm and 8pm, ITV1)

After Amy’s secret came out yesterday, she’s back around at Joanie’s again tonight, banging on her door and trying to explain that she meant no harm.  But far from changing Joanie’s mind, what happens next only turns Joanie against her even more.

Also tonight, Alicia is having a hard time convincing Dom that she’s totally over David. Probably because she isn’t.

Eastenders (7:30pm BBC1)

There’s  an orgy of embarrassing snogging tonight as EastEnders turns on the romance.

While Alice and Tamwar are kissing on the sofa, Masood is over at Carol’s trying to get a moment alone with her which is never easy with four kids traipsing in and out.

But an even bigger distraction is waiting on the doorstep with the return of David Wicks.
