Every moment is another chance

THIS week marks the release of 8 Mile - the feature film starring debut of controversial rapper, Eminem. And we have five pairs of tickets for you and a pal to see it for free.

Thanks to our chums at the Odeon Multiplex, Brombrough, we are offering you a chance to win a pair of tickets to see 8 Mile for FREE.

Set in Detroit, 1995, 8 Mile finds the city a fallen empire, the once prosperous neighbourhoods have been left to decline.

The promise of Detroit's industrial splendour has collapsed into a mass of economic and racial division following one of the worst riots in American history, and 8 Mile Road - the city's boundary - is now a dividing line between urban and suburban, between black and white.

Detroit has always had a potently creative musical heritage, and for those on the breadline - where survival and hope are balanced on a knife edge - the most accessible lifejacket is hip hop.

Seen as a topical and insightful art form by many, rap music is all that is keeping people like Jimmy Smith, Jr. (Eminem), from drowning in poverty and emotional decay.

A product of a broken, dysfunctional home, Jimmy and his surrogate family - his "crew", Three One Third: Future (Mekhi Phifer), Sol (Omar Benson Miller), DJ Iz (De'Angelo Wilson) and Cheddar Bob (Evan Jones) - have created their own family.

Jimmy and Three One Third struggle to make a decent living in dull, dead end jobs and dream of catching the one big break that will make them.

At night they - along with the rest of the city's best rappers - battle each other with emotionally violent rhymes as they compete for the respect of their peers.

No matter where we live or who we are, we're all bound by borders ... some real, some imagined. Most are content to live within these borders, others are forced to.

But what happens when you need to break out, even if what lies on the other side is both terrifying and unknown?

To see the film all you have to do is answer the following question:

What is Eminem's alter ego's name?

a) Slim Shady

b) Slight Shadow

c) Dim Dark

Now just e-mail your answer, along with your name, address and a contact phone number to gailthomson@icliverpool.net
