World Book Day 2016 is just over a week away and is the day when millions of children celebrate their love of books.

They do this by dressing up as their favourite book characters

Here’s everything you need to know about the literary event.

What is World Book Day?

World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and - most importantly it’s a celebration of reading.

It’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

The event is in its 19th year and children of all ages will once again come together to appreciate reading.

The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Book tokens will be given to children so they can purchase £1 books from a special selected list of titles.

When is World Book Day?

This year it falls on Thursday, March 3 but in other countries World Book Day is celebrated on April 23 - William Shakespeare’s birthday.

In the UK and Ireland, World Book Day is on the first Thursday of March. According to organisers, this date came about after serious thought and lengthy discussion to take into consideration religious holidays, school terms and potential conflict with other charitable activities.
