Schoolchildren will parade through Chester’s streets this Christmas during the return of the popular Lantern Parade.

Youngsters from Belgrave, Boughton Heath, Cherry Grove, Chester Bluecoat, Hoole, Lache, Newton and Tarporley primary schools will follow The Queen of Light from Town Hall Square on Thursday, November 26. The parade leaves the Town Hall at 7pm.

The lights switch on in Chester last year

Walking with their handmade lanterns the children will parade past the cathedral along St Werburgh Street, turning onto Eastgate Street toward the Cross, and then down Bridge Street before turning around and heading back up Northgate Street to end the parade at the Christmas Market in the Town Hall Square.

Cabinet member for culture, leisure and wellbeing Louise Gittins said: “Primary school children have created their own lanterns with the help of Chester artist Russell Kirk to bring this seasonal parade to the city.

“The parade will also include Chester’s Queen of Light, the giant structure built by Russell, adding more sparkles.”

The Lantern Parade is part of Chester’s Christmas celebrations that include the first visit by the famous Coca-Cola Christmas Truck organised by Chester Bid (December 3) the Christmas Market in Town Hall Square, Chester Zoo’s Lantern Magic, Chester Cathedral’s Christmas Carol exhibition, The Winter Watch Parades (December 10 and 17) and Saturnalia Parade (December 17).
