Chester's free programme for children, Family Saturdays, is to take place every Saturday afternoon this July and August with a line-up of activities ranging from a Mad Hatters' Tea Party to Pirate School.

Hosted in the city’s historic Roman Amphitheatre, the packed programme of free events ensures there will be something to do with the children in Chester all summer long.

Jenna Beaty, project manager for Family Saturdays, said: “We are really excited about this year’s programme. We know it can be difficult finding things to entertain the kids, so we hope our varied list of activities and events just does that.”

The full programme is as follows:

Saturday, July 12 - Shipwrecked: An afternoon of pirate themed activities, games and crafts. Highlights include, pirate school, walking the plank and tug-of-war games. Participants welcome to come dressed in pirate attire.

Saturday, July 19 - Wild West: Cowboy and Indian dress up, Wild West themed crafts including make you own wanted poster, create a dreamcatcher and build a mini tepee.

Saturday, July 26 - Stories Soldiers Spies: Second World War themed activities, games and crafts including creating your own secret identity, ration bingo, code breaking workshops and storytelling.

Saturday, August 2 - All Things Roman: A weekend hosted by Chester’s famous Roman Tours.

Saturday, August 9 - Madhatter’s Tea Party: An afternoon of Alice in Wonderland themed crafts and games, including White Rabbit-clock making workshops, red rose and soldier making crafts, flamingo croquet, face-painting and dress-up.

Saturday, August 16 - Gigantic Games: A day full of oversized board games and crafts.

Saturday, August 23 - Summer Holidays: Join a suitcase scavenger hunt, badge making workshops and a host of beach themed games.

Saturday, August 30 - Fantasy Folklore and Fairytales: Activities include fairy and wizard fancy dress, fairy habitat making workshops, storytelling, folk dance classes, dragon making sessions and ‘how to be a villain’ courses.

Booking is not necessary, simply arrive at the Amphitheatre anytime between noon and 4pm, every Saturday this summer.
