The racing season is under way in Chester and there were one or two famous faces to welcome its arrival at the Roodee on Wednesday, May 6.

Liverpool football legend Kenny Dalglish was spotted with his wife Marina on the windswept opening day of the traditional May Festival.

Another sporting icon soaking up the atmosphere - and the rainfall - was former champion jockey Frankie Dettori.

And adding a touch of glamour to an otherwise overcast Chester Cup day was Charlotte Dawson, daughter of the late, great comedian Les Dawson.

The Chester Cup, the feature race of the afternoon, was won by 10-1 shot Trip to Paris who beat the much-fancied Gabrial’s King into fourth place.

Chester will be transformed into a fashion follower’s paradise on Thursday, May 8 with Ladies Day set to attract a vast array of spectacular outfits as racegoers hope for better weather.
