The perils of polygamy were brought to life with Chester Theatre Club’s latest production Boeing Boeing – a supremely ridiculous farce with an international flavour, despite the entire play being set in one madcap day at a Parisian flat.

The play revolves around Bernard (Andy Adams) impressing his old school chum Robert (Owen Monie) with his cunning plan – to be engaged to three air stewardesses at the same time.

Crucially, the jetsetting trio of airhead American Gloria (Rhiannon White), firey Italian Gabriella (Meg Larmour) and imposingly passionate German Gretchen (Cezara Arsenie) are blissfully unaware of each other’s existence, thanks to a clever timetable schedule which means only one of them is in Paris at any given time. Even long-suffering housemaid Bertha (Pat Cameron) is in on the ruse.

But the ploy is sorely tested when freak weather conditions lead to a stormy night for Bernard, Robert and Bertha.

It was especially enjoyable to see how the pace of the production changed frantically as each fiancee’s arrival and departure led to a panicked swapping of pictures to match the make-up of the couple in the flat at the time.

One cast member who deserves singling out for praise is Cezara Arsenie, who valiantly stepped in as a last-minute replacement. Despite having no prior acting experience and learning the role in her second language, she performed brilliantly and there was no hint of her being a substitute.

And as someone blissfully unaware of the plot beforehand, it was pleasing to see the ending, thanks to a series of twists, doesn’t disappoint.

Chester Theatre Club will be holding an open evening at Chester Little Theatre as it is on the lookout for more talented people to help on and off the stage. The evening will be held on February 17 from 8-9pm.
