The Sixties will be swinging once again at Clwyd Theatr Cymru in Mold next week thanks to Tip Top Productions.

The Chester-based theatre company is staging Hold Tight It’s 60s Night with an all North Wales cast from Tuesday, June 16-Saturday, June 20.

The show was compiled in 1989 by Paul Kerryson and Maggie Norris and played to packed houses in its original theatre, Oldham Coliseum, and then across the UK.

Director Peter Swingler said: “I saw the 1989 show several times and I always hoped that Tip Top would one day be able to produce it at Clwyd Theatr Cymru with a home grown cast. We have been very lucky that each cast member does, in fact, originate and live in North Wales.

“The opportunity to present an iconic 60s musical arose earlier this year when our previous selection, The Sound of Music, was withdrawn from amateur performance because of a professional revival. We quickly decided that Hold Tight would be a great offering for our loyal supporters in North Wales and Cheshire.”

Musical director Simon Phillips added: “This show is a must for the whole family as it’s very funny indeed and includes some fabulous 60s sounds including I Heard It Through The Grapevine, It’s Not Unusual, You’re My World, I Got You Babe, Bridge Over Troubled Water plus another 30 hits.

“It’s a bit like Dreamboats and Petticoats or Return to the Forbidden Planet; there’s a classic 60s song every few minutes.”

The show is choreographed by Tip Top specialist Pam Evans-Hughes and she has researched and incorporated all the showiness of acts such as The Supremes, Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones and even Elvis.

The story is of Ruby, a romantic in love with her unattainable hero Rock, but how can she meet him? She needs the help of Wrexham actor/director Steve Davies as the outrageous Big Brenda Beehive. Brenda has had the cast in stiches during rehearsals as ‘he’ brings his own Lily Savage to Mold.

Connah’s Quay based Laura Roberts takes on the lead role of Ruby ably supported by the girl group, The Coarsettes, featuring Awen Thomas, Amy Robinson and Grace Inskip.

The cast is completed by another Wrexham professional performer Kate Salmon, veteran rocker Bill Hughes last seen at Clwyd as the King in The King and I while Rock is played by 19-year-old Kieran Roberts who grew up in Mold alongside Flint’s Abbie Sherratt and Luke Disley.
