Chester Quartz Youth Theatre stages new play based on photographs

Youth theatre's devised work The Scrapbook is at Chester Music Theatre from February 17-19

Members of the youth theatre Quartz are putting on an original production entitled The Scrapbook at Chester Music Theatre

A Chester youth theatre is presenting an original play based on photographs of the young actors.

The Scrapbook is the culmination of months of devising by Quartz Youth Theatre based around the subject The Philosophy of Photography.

The group were asked to pick a photograph with someone they didn’t know in the background, a stranger who was wandering by and accidentally was captured in the shot. Each of the group chose a person from these photos and created an entire back story for them; they decided how they spoke, where they were from, their jobs, their entire persona.

They chose some of the more unusual cast’s creations to form the basis of The Scrapbook and the play follows the stories of four pairs of these characters.

Artistic director Matt Baker said: “The company have devised incredibly intricate stories based on their impressions of these people and have had complete control about the direction their stories and characters go in.

“The work they have completed is testament to their incredible imaginations, gift for story-telling and of course their talent in performing.”

The play is directed by Steph Green with assistant director and former Hammond School student Winnie Southgate. Music composition and direction is by Matt Baker.

Scrapbook will be presented at Chester Music Theatre in Boughton from February 17-19 at 7pm and also at Action Transport Theatre, Whitby Hall on Friday, February 20 at 7pm.
