Ibou Touray has settled into life with Chester FC well and reckons working with Gareth Roberts can help him continue his football education.

An important element of the new model Steve Burr has introduced is finding and developing footballers with potential to progress.

Some have been plucked from lower down the pyramid and others taken on having been released from bigger clubs.

Touray, whose nickname is Ibby, signed for Everton in 2011 and did enough to win a professional contract but the Goodison Park club released him in May.

He trialled with Tranmere Rovers and caught Burr’s attention in the pre-season draw between the clubs so when the League Two side decided not to take him on, the Blues boss moved in.

Touray has impressed in his four appearances even though the left back has been used in midfield but the 19-year-old thinks having the experienced Roberts behind him will stand him in good stead.

Touray said: “I don’t mind playing anywhere.

“Being left wing in front of Gareth Roberts is great because he’s got so much experience.

“It’s good to learn from him and I enjoy playing in the attacking positions.

“I’m enjoying it here. All the lads are proper sound and I’m getting along well with everyone so it’s going well.”

Toxteth-born Touray, who has Gambian heritage, came close to joining Liverpool before deciding to accept an offer from rivals Everton.

He spent three seasons with the Toffees, where he played alongside current team-mate Ben Heneghan, before being let go at the end of last season.

Touray made his first start for the Blues in the 3-0 loss at Grimsby Town on Saturday and came off the bench in the 2-1 win at AFC Telford United midweek.

He replaced Jadan Hall for second half and the energetic left-footer made an important contribution as the Blues moved back into 16th place.

Touray said: “The manager said just come on and make an impact, get at the fullback and keep the ball and work hard.

“It was a good win and everyone was buzzing in the dressing room with the three points.

“Our fans were louder than the whole stadium, it was proper good and we’ve got great fans here.

“It’s been good to climb up the table in the last month.”

Chester have an excellent chance to build on a fruitful September with back-to-back home games against Welling United and Aldershot Town.

Both sides are situated in the same mid-table group as the Blues and Touray sees no reason for the team not being able to pick up further points.

He said: “Hopefully if we can keep this momentum going then we can climb up the table fast.

“If we can keep playing the way we are and win some big games in the next few weeks then I think we’ll do alright this season.”
