WIDNES RUFC have been rapped after the abandonment of last month's game at Oldershaw in the Powergen Northern Division for 'persistent fighting'.

Senior Heath Road officials were reprimanded at an RFU disciplinary hearing in Leeds on Monday and warned about the future conduct of their players.

But Oldershaw have taken the brunt of the punishment for the game on Saturday, November 4, being halted.

Widnes player Mark Whitfield, 28, had a broken jaw after a spectator allegedly attacked him.

The Wallasey-based club will be relegated from South Lancashire & Cheshire Division One at the end of the season.

They will start 2007-08 in South Lancashire & Cheshire Division Two with a seven-point penalty but can appeal against the decision.

Two Oldershaw players have been charged with striking an opponent.

The cases against John Pritchard and Anthony Molloy were adjourned until January 29. Both have already been suspended beyond that date by their club.

A charge facing James Winstanley, a spectator at the match, accused of running on to the playing area and joining in the fighting, was also adjourned to the same date.

* New signing, ex-Chester centre Steve Burke, will play for Widnes in Saturday's crucial league game against Sale FC at Heywood Road.

Sale FC will still be smarting after their 23-13 defeat at Heath Road last month.

The eighth annual challenge game between Widnes' Over 35s and the Under 19s takes place on December 30.

The youngsters lead by 4-3 in the series, but with the veterans playing league rugby for the first time, they could well spring a shock.

This Saturday, the club hosts a Carol Service by the St Bartholomew's Church Choir of Rainhill.
