Helsby assumed top spot in Division Five South with a hard-fought and gruelling 14-0 win over Oswestry 3rds.

There is now a single point between the top three of Helsby, Winnington Park 3rds and Acton Nomads after the Greens gained revenge for defeat at Oswestry earlier in the season.

The visitors made a strong start to the conest but Helsby’s defence was immense with Oswestry unable to find a score in the opening 20 minutes and a break from deep then gave the home side the lead with Phil Arkell crossing and Alex Walker converting for a 7-0 scoreline.

Oswestry exerted more pressure on Helsby’s line but could not find a gap before the half-time whistle sounded.

The hosts remained under the cosh early in the second period with the game in the balance throughout until a break from Walker led to a second score for Arkell with seconds remaining and Walker converted to seal an excellent victory for Helsby, who welcome Altrincham Kersal 3rds this weekend.
