Helsby 5 Port Sunlight 29

HAVING shipped 60 unanswered points the last time they faced Port Sunlight back in October, Helsby at least showed some signs of improvement on Saturday.

With some key men unavailable, the hosts had to field an inexperienced front row and it meant they struggled to get quality ball at the set pieces.

They conceded the first try of the afternoon after losing a scrum.

They made a few tactical changes but could not stop Port Sunlight from adding a further two tries before the half-time break, both coming from poor Helsby tackling.

The hosts found themselves 17-0 down at the interval and they were unable to claw their way back into the game after the restart.

The Port Sunlight scrum-half took charge and dummied his way over for a further two tries.

There was a consolation score for Helsby when Ben Royle went over in the corner in the dying minutes.

Bob Merrill had another good game for Helsby but was pipped to the man of the match award by John Cook.

Helsby, who are bottom of the South Lancs/Cheshire Three table, are away to Prenton this Saturday.

In Division Four West of the University of Salford League, Christleton racked up a 38-10 victory at Liverpool St Helens 3rds.

They face another away trip this Saturday when they travel to mid-table rivals Sefton 3rds.
