Helsby 12 Knutsford 53

HELSBY started poorly and never recovered as Knutsford ran out clear winners in Saturday’s South Lancs/Cheshire Three encounter.

The visitors were allowed too much space in the opening minutes and they capitalised by scoring a converted try.

It was quickly followed by two more scores to leave basement side Helsby reeling.

A tactical switch paid dividends for the hosts when man-of-the-match Bob Merrill, moved into the pack, took a pass from Jimmy Walker to score.

But Helsby still found themselves 22-5 down at the half-time interval and Knutsford went on to score a further five tries after the break.

Helsby’s only reply came late on when Andrew Rowlinson bagged an interception try and kicked the conversion.

Helsby are away to mid-table Prenton this Saturday.
