A FAIRYTALE run in a national competition came to an end for a school rugby team.

Bishop Heber High came within one win of a day out at Twickenham, but in their Daily Mail RBS Cup semi-final tie they were edged out 7-5.

The under 15s side began their journey toward the home of English rugby back in September as they progressed through the preliminary round and knew victory over QEGS Wakefield on Saturday would make their dreams become reality.

Hopes were raised as Bishop Heber made a fine start in the game played on neutral territory at Broadstreet Rugby Club in Coventry.

Flanker Tom Curry crossed the line to give his side a 5-0 half-time lead and the performances of he and twin brother Ben – both Sale Sharks Academy players – were helping to drive Bishop Heber.

The travelling support from Cheshire were in good spirits as Twickenham edged ever closer.

But QEGS levelled the game just after the break and when the Yorkshire side converted the try, Wakefield moved ahead.

But Bishop Heber refused to give in and hammered on QEGS’ door in a breathless final 25 minutes.

Both sides missed chances in the closing stages and Bishop’s committed defence kept them within touching distance at all times. However, hopes of their incredible journey going one step further ended as QEGS held on.
