Steve Dorrington praised the character his Ellesmere Port side displayed in the 24-7 win at Capenhurst.

Two weeks without a game led to the Oilers exhibiting some ring rust in a rain-affected first half that ended pointless.

Dorrington’s charges came out in the second period and gave a masterclass in building phases and creating chances, racking up 17 unanswered points for a bonus point win after the scores had been levelled at 7-7.

Dorrington said: “Our young side showed great character in changing the game in the second half.

“We came here to do a job and the mission was accomplished and a bonus point win away from home always brings a smile to my face.

“Capenhurst gave their all and must be credited for their gutsy display.”

Cape shaded the opening 40 minutes, adopting an effective game-plan with veterans Paul Forster and Chris Fay bossing the breakdown.

Port came under pressure but defender well with replacement Martin Titherington and Jerry Philip adding valuable experience to the young pack.

Conditions improved for the second half as did the Oilers, who showed far greater cutting edge.

Fly half Joe White became the go-to man for Port, orchestrating the space for his side to press deep into Cape territory.

Philip crossed for the first score after a clever offload from James Callaghan and White added the extras to put them 7-0 up.

Cape levelled against the run of the game when a loose pass was collected and returned 60 metres but Port soon regained the lead thanks to some big contributions off the bench.

Lee Rennox touched down next to the posts with White converting and centre Anthony Jones found Eric McMorine with a smart pass to make the score 19-7.

Port continued to push forward and Rennox, who shared the man of the match honours with White, gave an unselfish pass to teenager Joel Gibbs to round things off.

Dorrington said: “The squad did their job and the roll on roll off substitutions used to the full was a prominent part of the game, helping to keep things fresh.

“Our troops understand the system is there to be used and all players are selfless in their team approach.”

Port are hoping for another good crowd when Congleton come to Dunkirk Lane on Saturday (3pm) in South Lancs and Cheshire Division Three.
