Chester -born goalkeeper Tom Heaton made one of the best saves in Premier League history during his astonishing performance for Burnley against his former club Manchester United.

That was the view of United legend Peter Schmeichel after Heaton produced a magnificent stop to deny Zlatan Ibrahimovic during Burnley's 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.

The stunning 'star jump' block, which was made famous by Schmeichel, was one of 11 saves made by the former Upton-by-Chester High School student in a one-man show of defiance.

But one of the game's greatest ever goalkeepers had no doubt which his favourite was.

Schmeichel tweeted: "Tom Heaton's save from Ibrahimovic is in my opinion one of the best in Premier League history. Just saying!"

Schmeichel was not the only former footballer to be impressed by England international Heaton.

Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker and Chester-born Danny Murphy all praised the Burnley captain on Match of the Day.

Shearer said: "Tom Heaton made some superb saves, one of which was brilliant; an unbelievable save."

Heaton, whose parents Joan and Dave live in Guilden Sutton , was also pleased with his afternoon's work.

The 30-year-old, who started his career at United, said of his stop from Ibrahimovic: "He caught it really well.

"I tried to close the space down and spread myself as best as I could. Thankfully, today it hit the end of my arm, it was a sore one on the elbow because it was fully extended but it never quite hurts as much when you keep it out."
