PAUL Economides is hoping boxing supremo Eddie Hearn will help him land a second shot at the WBC international super bantamweight title.

Economides suffered a narrow points loss to hometown favourite Sean Davis in the battle for the vacant strap in Birmingham last weekend.

But the 29-year-old, who was raised in Connah's Quay and now lives in Vicars Cross, enhanced his reputation greatly with his performance in the ferocious live Sky Sports clash.

Matchroom chief Hearn was particularly impressed. He took to Twitter before the judges made their call to state: “Great fight – got Economides nicking a close one... you?”

And the following day Hearn replied to a tweet from the WBF intercontinental super bantamweight champion by saying: “I had you nicking a very close one mate... a pleasure to have you on the show, looking forward to next one.”

At the promoter’s request Economides took the fight at late notice after an ankle injury to Gamal Yafai led to the cancellation of his Commonwealth title showdown with Davis.

And now the Spartan has his fingers crossed Hearn will reurn the favour.

Economides, who was fighting for the second time in seven days after beating Elvis Guillen the weekend before, said: “I’ve watched it back again and I thought I did enough to win. When I went back into the corner everyone was saying I’d done enough. I was thinking, ‘I’ve won this’.

“But it was always going to be difficult on an away show. He [Davis] is a Brummie, it was in Birmingham, and he’d sold heaps of tickets. But I still think I did enough to win.

“I only had three days to train for it. But there was no way I was going to turn the fight down. Hopefully I’ll get the chance again because I was so close to winning the belt I’ve dreamt about I could almost cry!

“I can’t see his team going for it straight away so I’ll have to go out and have another fight.

“But Eddie Hearn is as good as his word and hopefully we’ll be able to get it on.”

Economides’ career has gone from strength to strength since signing up with top manager Dave Coldwell. But the personal trainer still has to juggle boxing with a full-time job.

Economides, who trains at Chester Boxers in Hoole under Steve Goodwin, is thankful for the support of Sapporo Teppanyaki restaurant in Liverpool.
