A GROUP of Chester wrestlers put on a show of strength at a competition in Stoke.

Five members of the Chester Submission Wrestling and MMA Club were in impressive form at the UMA British Open Submission Grappling Championship.

In the 65kg category, Christleton High School student Dominic Watkins battled his way to fourth place in the competition’s largest category, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal. Club-mate Mark Williams also fought boldly in the same division.

Ieaun Evans made his grappling debut in the 95kg category, picking up three wins on his way to an impressive fourth place.

The highlight of the day came when two wresters from the Chester club met in the final of the 85kg division.

First-time wrestler Matty Holmes and undefeated MMA fighter Mike Adams took gold and silver respectively, crushing eight opponents between them.

It meant Chester Submission Wrestling finished fifth overall, out of 36 clubs.

The Chester club was established just over two years ago and is run by coach Dave Ives at the Chester Boxers gym in Hoole.

Submission wrestling, created in Japan, covers all forms of ground fighting with the aim of obtaining a submission.
