DESPITE another below-par home performance on Saturday, the Motormen secured victory thanks to two superb saves from Chris Holmes.

The result leaves Vauxhall just two points adrift of third position in the table, but manager Alvin McDonald is still disappointed by his side's home form.

He said: 'I just wish we could give a good display in front of our home supporters. They must think we are lying when we tell how well we frequently play away.'

The Motormen made hard work of seeing off the visitors, but despite a slow start, they took the lead on 20 minutes.

Kevin Lynch glanced home a header from Nicky Young's pinpoint cross from the left with Hucknall keeper Dave McCarthy in no man's land.

Vauxhall had a major let-off when a free kick from the left touchline found Russell Cooke unmarked at the far post but the home defence scrambled the ball clear.

After the break, Young fired just wide following a short free kick, but this seemed to stun Hucknall into action.

Suddenly, the visitors were piling on the pressure and Holmes showed great agility to deny efforts from substitute Danny Mayman and Cooke.

Vauxhall seemed to have withstood the anxiety as Young struck from the edge of the box on 79 minutes following good build-up play from Carl Nesbitt and Wayne McDermott.

But within seconds of the restart, Hucknall pulled a goal back to put the result back into the melting pot as Mayman was on hand at the far post to head home.

This was the signal for the visitors to throw more men forward in an effort to grab an equaliser. But this gave Vauxhall space to hit them on the break and five minutes later sub Terry Fearns sealed the victory with his 17th goal of the season.

Fearns raced clear but was forced wide by the keeper, although he remained cool and cut back inside to squeeze the ball home through a ruck of players.

Vauxhall: Holmes, Rigby, McDermott, Brazier, Haddrell, Lynch, Nesbitt, Lawton, Cumiskey (Fearns 75), Young, Wright.
