CHESHIRE Tigers opened their new season with a series of pleasing performances at the weekend.

U20s age-group athletes from Macclesfield, Crewe and Nantwich, Vale Royal and West Cheshire AC clubbed together for the first round of the National Junior Track and Field League Mersey Division fixture at Bolton's Leverhulme Park.

Michelle Robbins secured the Athlete of the Match prize after achieving an impressive 10.98m triple jump. And sprint sensation Hayley Jones stunned onlookers to grab a 100m win in a time of 12.2 seconds.

Fiona Rudkin (4:59.4) and Stevie Stockton (10:52.7) celebrated successes from the 1,500m and 3k respectively.

Cheshire Tigers' boys finished fifth at Bolton. West Cheshire AC sprinter Tom Price opened his season's account with two new bests after posting 11.5 (100m) and 24.0 (200m).

Multi-eventer Simon Sloan produced a string of good results: 16.3 for the high hurdles; high-jumping 1.75m and long-jumping 5.89m.

Andrew Ellis dominated the 2k steeplechase to record an easy victory, despite running further than the necessary distance.

Problems with having the water splash in an incorrect position on the track meant that Andrew and the rest of the field started in the wrong place and ended up running approximately 200m further than they needed to!

Fixtures for WCAC this weekend include the opening round of the Northern Track and Field League at Woodbank Park, Stockport, on Saturday, and the first round of the Cheshire Track and Field League on Sunday, at Deeside Stadium, Connah's Quay.
