Veteran American Davis Love III became the third oldest winner in PGA Tour history after shooting a brilliant final round of 64(-6), including two eagles, to overcome a four shot deficit and win the Wyndham Championship by two shots.

The 51-year-old’s last win on the PGA Tour was back in the 2008 Children’s Miracle Network Classic, which was also the last time he had two eagles in a single round on the PGA Tour. It is the third time Love has won the Wyndham Championship during his long and successful career.

While there are a number of fantastic young players beginning to dominate the world golfing scene at the moment, the likes of Colin Montgomerie, Bernhard Langer and now Love are proving that more than ever it is possible to compete against the young guns well into the ‘twilight’ of their careers.

Golf equipment technology has changed dramatically over the last 20 years or so, with the golf ball now going further and higher than ever before and golf clubs becoming more and more forgiving each year. All of these factors have meant that many golfers, whilst on paper maybe past their ‘prime’ golfing years, are actually playing the golf of their lives and hitting the ball further than they ever have done.

While some golfing traditionalists see these technology improvements as a negative, I am quite the opposite.

Now it really is never too late to take up golf. While walking an average 18-hole round of golf it is estimated that you burn 1,500 calories, making golf a great way to keep fit or lose weight and keep you heart healthy, as well as spending quality time outdoors amongst some of the stunning scenery in our region.

Golf is also a great social tool, whether you are playing golf with existing friends or meeting new people at local golf clubs and courses.

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to the number and variety of golf courses in the Chester area, with roughly 80 courses in Cheshire alone, meaning that all budgets and standards of golfer are catered for.

Many golf courses in the Chester area have fantastic deals for new members, green fee specials and much more. So whether you are new to golf, or maybe haven’t played golf for a while, there really has never been a better time to get into golf.
