I am excited to say that, starting from today, I am the new golf columnist for The Chester Chronicle.

To introduce myself, I am a class A PGA Professional based in Helsby, Cheshire. I am a two-time Scottish Assistant PGA Professional of the year (2011 and 2012), and I am lucky enough to currently be playing as a full-time tournament professional while also offering coaching for anyone that is interested in shooting lower scores.

I have been very fortunate to be mentored by Scottish PGA Professional and 1995 British Amateur Champion, Gordon Sherry, for a decade. Through Gordon, I was also able to spend regular time with the late, great Bob Torrance, one of golf’s greatest ever coaches who sadly passed away last summer.

The experiences and knowledge I have gained over the last 10 years have been invaluable and have put me in good stead for my future golfing career.

We have a lot of exciting ideas for this golf column, covering a wide range of topics. The topics will include local golf club news, locally-based golfing achievements, local golf tournament summaries (both amateur and professional) as well as some updates from both the European and PGA tours. There will also be instructional pieces for you keen local golfers, which will be directly linked to recent outstanding performances from the best players in the world.

Longer term we are also going to be adding instructional videos to supplement the instructional articles, which will be available on The Chronicle website, designed for anyone interested in a particular instructional article.

The golf season is fast approaching in the UK, with the Masters starting today. We hope you enjoy the articles, and hope you learn enough from the instructional pieces to improve your own golf games.
