A BUSY weekend for the City of Chester Swimming Club saw members winning medals in Cheshire and North Wales.

With new head coach Lee Holland now at the helm, the club was split for two competitions.

Older swimmers were in action at the first weekend of the Cheshire County Championships, in Stockport on Saturday and Macclesfield on Sunday. Younger club members headed to the Wrexham Anniversary Meet, under the guidance of assistant coach Don Bailey.

At the county championships, Chester’s Lucy Doherty won the 200m backstroke in the 15-year age category, setting a new Cheshire record along the way.

Club colleague Simon Ellershaw broke the 50m butterfly county record, only to later see it broken again by another swimmer. Nicola Ball achieved a British Championships qualifying time in the 200m backstroke, set numerous personal bests and won the 100m freestyle ‘B’ final.

Over in Wrexham, 26 Chester swimmers delivered some fantastic performances.

Highlights came from Christopher Hooper (1st in 50m breaststroke); Phoebe Thwaite (3rd in 50m backstroke); Kyle Stubbs (4th in 100m backstroke); Charlie Hopwood (4th in 100m individual medley); Thomas Townsend (4th in 100m backstroke, 4th in 100m individual medley)

Head coach Holland said: “My coaching staff and I are very excited about how fast the swimming was at the weekend.”
