CITY of Chester Swimming Club members young and old have stepped up to the mark at some of the biggest meets on the swimming calendar.

Leading the club’s medal charge was Sarah Eaglesham and Lucy Doherty at the Scottish National Open Championships in Glasgow.

The Tollcross event, which doubled up as Commonwealth Games trials, saw Scotland international Sarah make finals in the women’s 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle and 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly – as well as competing against the likes of double Beijing Olympic Games gold-medallist Rebecca Adlington.

The 17-year-old more than held her own in such exalted company as she recorded five top-six finishes, two personal best times and won bronze in the 400m freestyle to be crowned Scottish champion.

Helsby High School student Lucy also had reason to cheer. The 14-year-old bagged bronze medals in the girls 15 and under 100m and 200m breaststroke and qualified for the ASA National Age Groups Championships in Sheffield later this month.

Lucy’s and Sarah’s success came after top performances from Chester veterans at the same venue during the British Masters Championships.

Tom Walker, swimming in the men’s 75-79 age category, smashed a European record in the 200m breaststroke and British records in the 200m backstroke and 50m and 100m breaststroke. He also won gold in the 200m individual medley.

Tom’s wife Brenda was also in fine form in the 50m Olympic-size Tollcross pool as she stormed to women’s 70-74 100m and 200m backstroke and 100m and 200m freestyle gold. She also added 50m backstroke silver.

Joining Brenda and Tom in Glasgow was Peter Welsh, who marked his return to masters swimming by finishing seventh in the men’s 50-54 50m butterfly and ninth in the 50m breaststroke.

Emily Noden, meanwhile, swam up a storm in Germany where she was representing Great Britain at the European Deaf Championships.

The 13-year-old broke four U14s British deaf swimming records in the 200m individual medley and 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke at her first ever international meet, making it through to six finals.
