A BUSY month for City of Chester Swimming Club saw members competing in Manchester, North Wales and Yorkshire.

Five senior swimmers took part in the North West Region Youth Championships at Manchester Aquatics Centre, performing well despite missing out on medals.

The Chester squad comprised 15-year-olds Jack Edwards, Kyle Stubbs, Laura Davies and Lauren Goodfellow plus Matt Breen, 16.

The first day of competition saw all five in action. Jack competed in the 50m breaststroke; Kyle in the 400m freestyle and 100m backstroke; Matt in the 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 50m butterfly; Laura in the 50m freestyle; and Lauren in the 50m and 200m freestyle, 50m and 200m backstroke.

On day two, Kyle competed in the 200m backstroke and 1,500m freestyle; Matt in the 50m freestyle; Laura in the 100m freestyle and Lauren in the 100m backstroke.

At the Wrexham Spring Meet on the same weekend, 17 Chester swimmers came away with a large medal haul.

Club members bagged 12 golds, 10 silvers and five bronze medals, plus two records, against strong competition from teams from North Wales and the North West.

Thomas Rowlands, 11, won silver in the 50m backstroke and bronze in 50m butterfly.

Eleven-year-old Millie Riddick won gold in the 200m individual medley; 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke; 400m freestyle and 50m butterfly, as well as silver in the 100m and 200m freestyle and 100m breaststroke and bronze in the 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly.

In the 12-year-old girls category, Georgia Williams struck gold in the 200m freestyle, 50m and 100m butterfly, and 400m individual medley. She also won silver in the 100m freestyle and 200m butterfly, bronze in the 100m individual medley and broke records for the 50m and 100m butterfly.

Chris Hooper, 12, claimed gold for the 100m breaststroke and silver in the 50m backstroke and 200m individual medley.

The medals kept on coming for Chester as 13-year-old Thomas Townsend got a silver in the 50m freestyle and bronze for the 100m individual medley, while Oliver Tobin, 14, swam well to achieve a silver for 50m butterfly.

The following weekend, three Chester swimmers travelled to Leeds to take part in the annual Sports Aid Meet.

Hooper, competed on the first day in 200m freestyle, 50m backstroke, and 100m and 200m breaststroke.

Lauren Goodfellow, 15, also competed on the first day in the 50m backstroke, claiming the gold medal in the 14/15 years age group. She then claimed silver in the 200m backstroke, and took the bronze in the 50m freestyle, while also racing in the 100m freestyle.

Williams, 12, competed over both days in 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, 50m backstroke, the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley. She claimed the bronze medal in the 200m butterfly for the 12/13 years age group.
