MID Cheshire is contributing seven athletes to the county squad for the English Schools Athletics Championships at Gateshead's International Stadium on Friday and Saturday.

Highest hopes of a medal must rest with Winsford triple jumper Hanna Hewitson, who has jumped 11.74m, the best in the country this season.

Getting it right on the day is never easy for jump-ers, but the 16-year-old Verdin High School pupil has already won two county and two northern titles.

St Nicholas RC High School sprinter Morgan Brown, of Winnington, goes in the inters 200m. If she repeats or betters her personal best of 25.00 seconds she should at least reach the final.

The 16-year-old, who was a beaten 100m finalist last year, was among the sprinters who had to leave Vale Royal AC to see better facilities elsewhere.

Hayley Jones was also among them. She is Crewe-based and contests 10.09. the 400m at Gateshead.

Also from Crewe, but qualifying from Sir John Deane's College, is Stevie Stockton, another who has achieved prominence via Vale Royal.

She won inters 1,500m silver last year, but this time is pitched into the 3,000m in her first year at senior level. Her pb is 10.09.

The fourth Mid Cheshire athlete in the girls' line-up is shot putter Louise Burton, 17, who has thrown a English Standard 10.48m this season.

Louise is a student at Mid-Cheshire College and a Macclesfield Harrier. She was eighth two years ago in the inters shot and believes she can improve on her pb and make a challenge.

The Grange School's Peter Morgan was a 10th of a second behind Robert Black (Macclesfield) in the Cheshire inters 100m finals and both are selected for that race.

Lee Davenport (Verdin High) has been selected for the inters 400m and has run 51.77, while James Griffiths (St Nicholas) competes in the senior 800m event after clocking 1:55.13. The Rudheath athlete finished fifth at intermediate level last year and both are members of Vale Royal.
