SUNDOWNER tightened their stranglehold in the Simms Cross Institute 301 League.

Already champions, they completed a league and cup double in the Sunday competition by winning the Bob Jones Top Four Play-off.

The semi-final saw them defeat Buffs, who had home advantage for the upstairs tie at RAOB Club in Sayce Street.

Simms Cross Institute beat Halton downstairs at the same venue.

Sundowner took a 3-1 lead in the final only for the Institute's J Lacey to reduce the arrears with help of a maximum. However, Ste Whitfield handed Sundowner the fourth win they required in a 5-2 victory.

In the K Thompson 501 League, Dave Caveney won an all-Childe of Hale final against A Whittaker to take the singles title - both contenders being county players.

The doubles competition, however, saw another triumph for Sundowner - Karl Whitfield and Anthony Hall beating two team mates in the final.

This is a particularly fine achievement as Hall is in only his second full year of playing.
