A WHEELCHAIR basketball player has been honing his skills on a national training camp.

Helsby High School student Nathan Maguire, 15, of Ashton Hayes, joined 90 other aspiring young athletes at the sixth National Talent Camp at Loughborough University.

Organised by youth sport charity the Youth Sport Trust, the camp was designed to teach promising young English athletes what it takes to become Olympic or Paralympic champions.

The four-day course, open to 13-18 year olds, involved two intense training sessions a day, along with a series of challenging workshops led by leading sports psychologists and athlete mentors.

The training camp was supported by Hannah Cockcroft, London 2012 double Paralympic gold medallist.

Hannah said: “The National Talent Camp is a great opportunity to form new friendships and these talented young athletes have a great opportunity to get a taste of what it takes to be an elite sports performer. It’s been fantastic to see everyone learning from each other and trying different sports.”
