ANGLING: ALAN Southern was a comfortable winner of the Tarporley AA open match at Oulton Mill Pool on Sunday.

He took seven carp using sweetcorn ledgered straight through his weight to weigh in 20lbs seven ounces, more than enough to beat Jack Williams who had three carp for 9-12-0 and Ron Latham who took a similar catch weighing 7-10-0.

The Fisherman's Tackle team put in their best performance of the season to win the Cudmore Fishery Spring League match to go into the top five. Phil Henry was their top rod with 43-12-0 of chub, carp and skimmers, supported by Colin Cook with 33-8-0 and Rob Pennington with 27-6-0.

Bob Roberts won the Mickle Trafford AC match at the Cheshire Fishery, Tattenhall with a 5-15-0 brace of rainbows.

Both teams competing in the final match of the Crewe and District Winter League on the SU Canal at Wardle improved their standings. Chester Tackle Locker were 10th to finish eighth overall, thanks to Chris Morris with 1-6-12, Phil Weaver 1-3-9 and Mike Beaumont 1-2-8, all with skim-mers. Willaston were seventh to improve to 10th overall through Peter Cooke 1-9-0, George Cooke 1-1-6 and Phil Cliffe 0-13-5.

Willaston were competing in the Seacat Super League on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Maghull where they were sixth to go 11th overall. Top weighers were Peter Nelson with a bit of everything in his 6-0-15, supported by Tony Churchill with 2-15-0 of roach and perch and Phil Cross with 1-9-2.

Rod 'N' Reel's Geoff Grantham landed second spot in the Heronbrook Fishery open match - a silver fish only contest in which he weighed in 20-4-0. Lenny Bolton was third with 18-6-0.

Maurice Molloy won the Lobol AC match at priory pool with 5-10-0 of skimmers and crucians ahead of Frank Hughes with a 3-8-0 carp in his 4-1-0 net and Danny Brown who had a 3-14-0 mixture.

First for Ellesmere Port British Legion AC at Meadow View fishery was Mike Pearson with 9-9-0 of carp and tench from Dave Allen's carp-based 7-12-0 and Mike Ray's 7-1-0 of carp.

Victory in the Milton Green Fishery open match went to Andy Amos with 19-6-0 of carp from Sam Kennedy's 17-12-0 of carp and Shaun Sandham's 14lbs of carp.

Sandham then took the honours in the Tarvin Sands AC Thursday match with 30-4-0 of carp from Ray Iball's 27-2-0 and Les Picken's 24lbs.

FISHERIES NEWS Llandegla: Eric Barlow, of Chester, netted the top brace of the week with rainbows of 11-13-0 and 10-14-0 to a fritz cat's whisker or orange fritz lure. Chester's Ian Porter had a 31-fish haul up to a 4-8-0 rainbow using a buzzer.

Lake Hill: Fred Dutton, of Chester, lifted the top fish of the week, an 11-12-0 rainbow and a 3-8-0 fish using ledgered worm.

Meadow: John Randles, of Chester, tempted a 5lbs rainbow to a green buzzer.

Tree Tops: Don Gibbs, of Saltney, tempted the best brace of the week with rainbows of 9lbs and 8lbs using green damsel fly nymph. David Ralph, of Tattenhall, coaxed a 7lbs rainbow to a black buzzer.

Dearnford Hall: Alun Cawley, of Ellesmere Port, lifted a 6-1-0 brownie to a black epoxy buzzer.
