UPTON B put their poor league form behind them to stage a giant-killing in the Chester and District League Challenge Cup.

The Haz-Decs Division side accounted for top-flight outfit Snooker Centre to record only their second victory of the season.

Kevin Green got Snooker Centre off to a good start with a close win over Doug Edwards, but Mark Hughes found the 20-point start he gave B Sharratt too much and went down by 14 points. Paul Cross was in great form. Receiving 12 points from John Kolar, he left the Snooker Centre player grounded by 87-43. Mike Wilks (Upton) was giving Francis Oweti a three-point start, but Oweti ran out an easy winner to make the scores 2-2 in frames.

John Gerrard received only two points off Kevin Roxburgh but ran out a worthy winner by 17. In the final crucial frame, Snooker Centre had to win by 36 points to take the match on aggregate, but Alan Coombes made sure it did not come to that. He defeated Pete Gerrard by 16 points to give Upton a famous victory.

Conservative A made short work of fellow Olympic Trophies Division team Liberal A. They ran out 5-1 winners with Anthony Barnes defeating Jason Taylor to register Liberal’s consolation.

Broughton Wings B – conquerors of their A team in the last round – were beaten when they came up against another Olympic Trophies Division side, St Werburgh’s United. Colin Jones started the ball rolling for United, but Mark Davies beat D Hammonds to level the scores. Darroch Mackie followed with a 20-point success over Gerry Byewater, before Mattie Hewitt drew the visitors level with a close verdict over Dave Smith. Alan Platt did a captain’s job for Werburgh’s, overcoming Bryn Hughes by 43 points, but the match was far from over. With Wings holding a three-point advantage come the final frame, it needed Frank Mills to beat Mike Griffiths for Wings to go through on the aggregate. But it was not to be as Griffiths ran out a comfortable winner by 33 points to give Werburgh’s the match.

John Money got Christleton A off to a good start against Liberal B. In a close frame in which he was receiving six points off Dennis Morgan, Money won by 13 points. Dave Ankers levelled the scores for the visitors before Mattie Done’s victory over Terry Willcox and Mike Craig’s success over Lew Williams put Christleton in a commanding position.

Gareth Cribben scored the surprise of the evening with his defeat of the previously unbeaten Barry Charker. Then Mark Cook settled the tie for Christleton with a 65-60 black ball win over Tom Horne as the match finished 4-2.

Christleton B, leaders of the Olympic Sports Division, travelled to Conservative C and won 4-0. Joey Wynne opened for Christleton with a 28-point verdict over John Morris. Barry Davies ran out an emphatic 95-25 winner against Alan Rogers, while Chase Kirwin had a 30 break in his victory over Ian Caine. Wayne Amey was in devastating form, scoring breaks of 55 and 43 as he overcame John McKenna to seal an emphatic success.

Elsewhere, St Saviour’s B beat Upton RBL C and St Werburgh’s A saw off Waverton.
