BOXING: THERE was a mixed bag of results for the three Runcorn teenagers on a tough-looking bill in the borough this week.

Thomas Smith, 14, won but his 13-year-old cousin Charlie Smith lost.

As for Lee Ward, he didn't get to fight due to his scheduled opponent pulling out because of flu.

Ward, 16, who fights for the Bridgefoot club in Warrington, was a Golden Belt National finalist last year.

The Smith boys also fight out of Warrington but from the Phoenix Olympic Boxing Centre which hosted Monday's show at St Basil's Social Centre in Hough Green.

It is the first event the club has staged in Widnes but after a sell-out, it is unlikely to be the last.

Thomas Smith won on a unanimous decision against Mersey's Bryn Jones who had to take a standing count in the last of three two-minute rounds.

But cousin Charlie was outsmarted late in his contest - a schoolboy bout over three rounds of 90 seconds each.

Topping the bill was Pheonix's Widnesian light-welterweight Liam Kavanagh, 27, who couldn't conceal his excitement after winning his first bout on home ground.

Widnes' former ABA Novices Class-B champion triumphed on a unanimous points decision against Thomas Bradford from the Paramount Club, Stockport.
