TEAMS from Abbey Gate College turned in top displays at two national skiing events.

The Chester college sent teams to the British Schoolboys Ski Championships in Meuringen, Switzerland, and the British Schoolgirls Ski Races in Flaine, France.

The boys raced giant slalom and slalom against 31 other teams while the girls competed against 52 teams over two days.

Their results represent a huge achievement for a small school up against not only the elite sporting schools but also British schools based in the Alps.

Abbey Gate’s boys ‘A’ team of Ben Shaw, Digby Brereton, Leo Karavasili and Rory Goodridge produced strong times in each race and were awarded the silver team medal in the under 16s competition.

Ben Shaw went one better when he won individual gold defending the title he won last year in the combined giant slalom and slalom races. Ben was racing skiers up to five years his senior.

Standout skier in the Abbey Gate girls team was Zoe Karavasili, who finished fourth in the country in her age group.

Overall, the Abbey Gate girls ‘A’ team finished a creditable ninth.

College teachers Sarah Campbell–Woodward and Sarah Parker, who oversee the running of the teams, agreed that the performances of the young skiers put down a national marker for the college.
