FISHING: ROD n' Reel came away with a midway placing in last Sunday's Heronbrook Fishery League match, writes Brian Roberts.

Their top weighers of the day were Geoff Grantham having carp to weigh 36-0-0 backed up by Lee Saville having 22-0-0 of the same.

Rob Smith topped in last Sunday's Peg 1 AC match fished on the Willow pool at the Burton Mere fishery.

His net of carp and skimmers weighing 11-6-0 proved better than Colin Pritchard having a mixed catch for 7-14-0 and Les Jones having 6-2-0 of carp and bream.

Tom Carr of Neston found it worthwhile last week to visit his local Burton Mere fishery. The 14-year-old's reward was a brace of 22-0-0 catfish plus another of 19-0-0 all taken to squid bait.

Ellesmere Port's Peter Price was the winner of the Good Friday open match at the Hampton Springs fishery. His bag of carp gave him a winning 66-10-0.

Steve Georgeson won the day in last Saturday's Rivacre AC match at the Blundell's Fishery.

Taking both hybrids fantail goldfish to weigh 25-12-0 gave him the edge over Bob Thelwell with similar for 21-4-0 and Jimmy Crimes having more of the same to weigh 20-10-0.

A bonus 2-8-0 tench helped Steve Furfie to first in the Helsby Sports and Social Club AC match on the BICC factory pools.

Adding roach and rudd brought his total to 7-2-0 to beat Chris Hargadon having a mixed bag for 3-12-0 ahead of Malcolm Lightfoot with 3-2-0 of roach.

John Holmes of Ellesmere Port struck lucky last week when fishing on the Grove Fishery at Backford.

His catch included a 9-0-0 grass carp which he took to sweetcorn.

Steve Jones, also of Ellesmere Port, used the same tactics to take a 11-0-0 grass carp.

Willaston AC dipped in the final match last Sunday in the Seacat Super League fished on the Leeds and Liverpool canal at Maghull. On the day they finished 10th to finish 12th overall.

Their top weighers on Tuesday were Charlie Smith having a mixed 6-14-0 supported by Peter Nelson with all bits for 2-0-0 and Phil Cross having 1-0-3.

Ellesmere Port members again dominated in the Manley AC match fished on Mouldsworth lake.

Taking bream and tench gave John Bristow a top of 7-8-0 ahead of Steve Roxborough having a tench to weigh 5-2-0 and Pete Cooper with 3-0-0 of bream and tench.

Willaston AC are running an open match this Sunday fishing on the Shropshire Union Canal at Croughton boats drawing at Croughton bridge at 8.30am, fishing 10am to 3pm.
