ELLESMERE Port Running Club's Alison Macdonald and Mike Burns, together with their three children Eve, Freya and Ingrid, made the short trip over the water to Liverpool to run in the 2006 Santa Dash 5k and children's Mini-Dash.

Liverpool's event was bidding to retain the world record for the most Santas in a race in the face of stiff competition from Las Vegas.

On a blustery and briefly wet morning more than 5,000 runners helped to deliver a welcome Christmas present of a new world record.

Mike and Alison both ran well in the main event, with Mike finishing in the top 10 for the second year and Alison just behind.

Meanwhile in North Wales there was torrential rain at the Helena Tipping 10k and long stretches of the course were submerged under up to a foot of water.

Undeterred, six waterproofed EPRC runners gamely battled through the galeforce winds and along flooded roads to record impressive times.

A fantastic run by the club's sole lady runner, Madelaine Bird, secured her first position in the Lady Vet 50 category, and 127th overall, in a time of 49min 29sec.

The first male runner home for the club, netting a superb third place, was Steve Crowe in 34:45, followed in by 12th placed Mark Dodd in 37:32. Matt Whitfield registered a creditable 41st overall in 41:00 dead, just ahead of John Jennings in 42:42.

Completing the sextet was Nigel Crierie who put in another solid performance to drive himself across the line in 51:56 for 153rd place.
